Are you longing to escape the heat and demands of the city? Are you looking to spend some time in the woods or by a river? You don’t have to drive far from the stress and bustle of Atlanta to savor the many natural wonders of North GA.
North Georgia Natural Wonders
North Georgia offers a myriad of beautiful scenery. And, it’s not just for viewing, most of the area’s natural sites offer hiking, fishing, kayaking, or other sports. Below are just a few of the scenic wonders you’ll find in this part of the state:
- Stone Mountain – Located just northeast of Atlanta (in the town of Stone Mountain), this imposing 1,682-foot rock is carved with the likenesses of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis. The top of the mountain is accessible via a hiking trail or by taking a tram. The carvings are the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world.
- Amicalola Falls – This 729-foot-high waterfall is the tallest in Georgia. Located within the 829-acre Amicalola State Park, the falls are named after the Cherokee word for “tumbling water.” Amicalola Falls is just outside of Dawsonville, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta.
- Rocktown – As its name implies, Rocktown is a collection of sandstone boulders, most of which are 30 to 40 feet high. The site, located in extreme northwest Georgia, is popular with rock climbers.
- Largest marble vein – Pickens County, located just north of Atlanta, is the site of one of the largest marble veins in the world. Marble from this vein, which runs four miles long, has been used to build the majority of marble buildings and monuments in Washington DC.
- Tallulah Gorge – Another of northern Georgia’s scenic wonders is Tallulah Gorge, located in the extreme northeast corner of Georgia, just outside of the town of Tallulah Gorge. Formed by the Tallulah River cutting into the rock over millions of years, the Gorge is a popular kayaking and whitewater rafting spot. Some scenes from the movie “Deliverance” were filmed here
