Northeast Georgia was the site of a minor gold rush during the late 19th and early 20th century. For starters, Helen’s Bavarian-themed downtown shopping district features dozens of one-of-a-kind stores with offerings ranging from Christmas decorations to handmade, wooden toys to locally-made glass and pottery. You can even watch local artisans at work blowing glass or throwing a pot.

Helen is also home to the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, a great place for all ages to learn about the rich folk art heritage and pottery-making techniques of this region, as well as Charlemagne’s Kingdom; an HO-scale replica of the renowned king’s Medieval European realm.

Oktoberfest in Helen

Fall is a special time in northern Georgia. The temperature cools. The air is crisp, and the leaves turn an array of brilliant colors. It’s also the time of year when Helen celebrates her Alpine roots with a three-week Oktoberfest, the longest-running festival of its kind in the southern United States. One of the most popular times of year to visit Helen, Oktoberfest features polka dancing, face painting, German music and crowd-pleasing food like potato pancakes, apple strudel and wiener schnitzel. It’s fun for kids of all ages.
