Kayaking
Wildwood Outfitters is the premier kayaking outfit in the the Helen area. Regardless if you’re a novice paddler or if you’ve kayaked many times before, Wildwood Outfitters has a tour perfect for your skill level. They will provide you the kayaks, life vests, paddles, safety equipment, and necessary instruction. There are a variety of tour routes to choose from including beginning routes that allow you to take it easy and enjoy the scenery and others with levels 1, 2, and 3 rapids for experienced kayakers.
Ziplining
There are many different zipline operators to choose from but one of our guests’ favorites is Fire Wire Zip Lines. They offer a variety of different adventures to choose from and they are able to accommodate all levels of thrill seekers. The Blue Ridge Canopy Adventure crosses a mountainside as riders zip through multiple layers of trees in the mountain forest. You can increase your adventure by adding a trip on the Fire Wire, the ultimate 1,700 foot zip line.
Horseback riding
Guests to the North Georgia mountains have discovered that horseback riding is one of the most idyllic ways to enjoy the local scenery. Whether you choose a simple trail ride, or opt for more adventure during an overnight excursion, you will certainly experience the beauty of the Georgia mountains. Sunburst Stables in Clarksville offers a Family Adventure Tour that that is open to anyone ages four and older. The trail ride leads you to a miniature animal farm where riders can pet rabbits, ferrets, pot bellied pigs, mini donkeys, and miniature cows. Once you’ve visited with the animals and have had a quick snack you will return to the trail to finish your ride.
Hiking
The famed Appalachian trail winds through the Georgia mountains and provides guests an incredible opportunity to be a part of history. You can opt for a variety of trail lengths and difficulties but the most popular hike is a two mile section of the trail that starts at Forest Service Road 42 near Amicalola Falls. Smithgall Woods State Park is located just three miles west of Helen and offers 23 miles of trails and roads. You can choose from several fun trails including a half mile hike to beautiful Duke’s Creek or an interpretive hike that details the gold mining history of North Georgia.
Tubing
For just three dollars you can join the tubing fun on the Chattahoochee River! Helen Tubing is one of the most popular tubing outfitters in Georgia and offers guests many tubing options. You can opt for a lazy day on the water with your friends and family, this is a perfect way to enjoy the North Georgia scenery. You can increase your adventure by choosing a longer tour or by adding on a trip to the Helen Tubing’s Waterpark.
Fishing
The North Georgia mountains are full of fishing hot spots. The Chattahoochee River is open year round to accommodate trout fishing enthusiasts. The river is full of twelve to fourteen inch rainbow and brown trout and is perfect for wade fishing. You can fish anywhere on the river but many guests have found venturing north to the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area much less crowded. There are few restrictions on the Chattahoochee with no limits on the types of hooks and bait used except the prohibition of using live minnows.
