You can experience a touch of Germany during the Oktoberfest 2013 in Helen GA. What is Oktoberfest? Look below to find out and to see what it is all about.

What is Oktoberfest?

The Oktoberfest tradition began back in 1810 when a royal wedding in Munich Germany turned into a two week long party in the streets of the town. The festival was complete with dancers, music and lots of Marzen beer. Now, years later the party goes on not only in Germany, but also in the quaint town of Helen GA. Since 1970, the town has been hosting their own Oktoberfest, filled with fun events for the whole family.

Bavarian Village of Helen GA

When you drive into town, you will instantly feel that you have just entered Germany. The town has been carefully designed to mimic the look of an original Bavarian alpine village. Adding to this look, is the Chattahoochee River which runs straight through town and is lined by German-style buildings and cobblestone streets. The town itself is captivating with it’s many German shops and abundance of outdoor activities. Then, when Oktoberfest begins the town takes on an even greater German feel.

What to Expect at Oktoberfest

The festival kicks off on September 14th at noon with a traditional Oktoberfest parade. During the parade you will experience authentic German costumes, dancers and live music. After the parade, follow the crowd to the Festhalle where you will be welcomed with live German music from a variety of bands from around the country. Some of these include the Mountain Top Polka Band, the Alpen Musikanten and Stratton Mountain Boys.

As they play Bavarian-syle beerhall music, grab your partner and step out onto the dance floor to join in on the fun. You will also get to see the fascinating dancing of traditional ladies in dirndl skirts. While there, be sure to enjoy your fill of delicious authentic brats and tasty German beer.
