Winter is knocking on our front doors and will be here soon. But just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. And you especially don’t want to stay cooped up in your hometown if you have children. Kids need to explore, run free, and get out of town, too. Head up to the cabins in Helen, like our Bear Affair cabin. With or without snow, this cabin promises to deliver a great time to vacationers. With Unicoi State Park as its neighbor, and Anna Ruby Falls down the road, getting back to nature is no problem for guests. While Bear Affair maintains a private, natural setting, nestled snug in the woods, it remains only about a 5-minute drive from downtown Helen; where you will find some main attractions for kids.

Christmas in the Mountains

Nothing says winter more than Christmas time. The holidays appeal to adults and kids alike but Christmas seems all the more magical with children around. The wonder in their eyes as they see a Christmas tree light up brings back the magic of the season to all of us. Helen celebrates Christmas with enthusiasm as the Bavarian town is transformed into an old-world holiday experience.

Start with the Festival of Trees just after Thanksgiving. Be sure to come to town the first weekend in December for the Christmas in the Mountains celebration complete with a Christmas Parade and Deck the Halls Festival at Unicoi State Park.

A Gold Rush

The first major gold rush in the United States took place in Georgia and families today can relive the glory days of gold mining. Several gold mine operations like Dukes Creek Gem and Mining and Gold n’ Gem Grubbin. invite visitors to pan for gold and other precious gems while learning about the gold rush history of Helen. Some locations even offer tours of the mines themselves.

So pack up the kids and get ready for a fun-filled trip to Helen!
